A week of Huelva

Seeking sunsets.

Story by Javi Lorbada September 25th, 2017

Unlike other stories, in this one, I've been trying to shape myself on to where I wanna go, both in writing and photography, this does not mean I found out the final direction, neither that I will not post future daily follow-ups here, but I've tried a few new things I like.

For a daily update, I started using Instagram Stories and Polarsteps, you should check them out and follow along! For that reason, this story it's not a daily summary, instead, I'm trying to showcase those places I've been during this trip.

Something I'd love to remark about this trip, I came with low expectations, looking for the unknown, the unexpected. With its pros and cons I found seascapes, landscapes, and sites that I didn't think would be present around, or wouldn't even exist around Huelva Province, and besides the coastline, I just explored 1% of the inland!

On the other hand, I came with my parents, something I think I hadn't done in ages, and I was really looking forward to it!

SO LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN.

El Rompido

"El Rompido" is a fantastic location for capturing sunsets, the harbor, the deck, marshes and the lighthouse make it great for capturing different subjects all around.

On top of that, they serve amazing fresh fried fish, which makes the sunset ending truly amazing.

El Muelle Del Tinto

I would say if you want to have a different view of the sunset, this location is what you are looking for, pretty unique in the area that lets you enjoy a walk along the river with a magic view of the deck and the sun behind. After that, you should definitely sit down at one of those terraces, where the food it's more elaborated but delicious as well.

Playa De El Portil

Although it's not the best beach in the area, it was pretty close to our apartment, which made us visited a few times. I liked it very much at sunrise, it was so peaceful and calm.

Marismas del Odiel

I have mixed feelings about this place. I was looking for that postcard image of "Flamingos silhouette in front of the Sun", well that didn't happen, instead I got the "Sun rising behind a crane and a football stadium", let's call it, a different postcard 😂.

Nevertheless, the sunrise spot was fabulous, the colors were very bright and the Flamingos were there, not too many, but enough to get some good shots.

Playa del Parador de Mazagon

Let me be honest, this place towards Playa de Rompeculos and Torre del Loro are by far the best location I've discovered on this trip. The coastline is an incredible area where Doñana National Park and the Atlantic Ocean converge into one absolutely gorgeous landscape.

We visited this area two times, and I think I will come back eventually again, sunset and walking next to, one side the ocean and the other side those cliffs, it's priceless.

Please do not miss this site if you are around.

Playa de Punta Umbría

Where two sunsets are not enough, really.

I visited this time twice, and both of them were amazing occasions. The sun goes down from a perfect angle, where if the day is clear you can see Portugal partly. Reflections in the water are special here.

Isla Cristina

The least liked place, of course, it all comes from expectations, and I had them very high for Isla Cristina. That made it a bit disappointing, so I did improvise. And I went walking all the way the "Dique de Levante" towards "Punta de la Gaviota", oh boy! That was an adventure! Really nice walk, with a dream ending, crossing the river water getting out of the marshes towards the sea when the tide was low. Epic fail! Impossible to cross with all my camera gear, which made me have to come back and thanks to very kind fishermen I could return somehow in a shorter route with no light at all.

Torre del Loro

This second time in the area we decided to go for a walk from the entrance at "Parador de Mazagon", about 10-kilometer walk in total loneliness, we may have seen five to ten people, which made this walk a highlight, time wasn't sunset or sunrise, outstanding anyway.

On top of that, what could it be better than walking in complete emptiness with your parents?

Note to myself, do this more often.

El Rocio

This small but very popular wasn't at all on schedule, however, my Mum really triggered my attention for this place. Which it turned out to be amazing. I loved the fact that there are no paved roads, just sand on the streets and most people move around by Horses. I can't imagine how amazing this village should be during their festivities.

For this village, I just had an afternoon and an early morning, dream situation sunset and sunrise, I have to admit, it did not disappoint at all!

The Moon

Like I mentioned above, this trip got me to try some new things, luckily these days the moon was on the Full Moon cycle. And what did that mean to me? Fun, very much!

Every other day brought a different situation until I started running while crazy guy along the beach in Punta Umbria, just with the purpose to frame every other subject I had and presenting it in front of the moon! 😅
